This month, I want you to focus a little bit more on those things that you have accomplished, those things you are currently working on, and those things you will accomplish in the next several years. When I think about all the areas of my life that I am constantly focusing on, it usually boils down to the following areas: career, family, physical, spiritual, and social. However, I rarely look at my life from a timeline perspective – in other words, I never really compare where I was, where I am, and where I am going. In fact, I usually concentrate more on the things that aren’t working out so well in my life.
Techniques
I have learned a technique that helps me reflect while still moving forward. Take about five or ten minutes to make an accurate assessment of where you were, where you are, and where you would like to be on the following areas: career, family, physical, spiritual, and social. Rate these areas on a scale of 1-10. 1 meaning you had nothing in this area and 10 meaning you were living your best life. Then, add a sentence for each category that describes what you were like back then, now, and what you’d like to be doing.
For example, five years ago, I was physically an 8 – I was exercising daily, including eating a fairly regimented meal schedule. Today, I am a 6 and not working out on a regular schedule – and cheating more often than I would like. However, five years from now, I will be a 9 and working out regularly, including preparing my meals and bringing them to work.
The purpose of this exercise is really just to help you realize how far you have come – or, what you can do that will help move your score up from today by learning from your past successes.
