Self Love

We are constantly taught how to love others. Many people emphasize what love should look like. People encourage others to love the way the Bible says.

1 Corinthians 13:4-5 New International Version (NIV) states that, “Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.”

As we encourage others to love this way, self-love is lost. We have to remember how to love ourselves the same way we love others. How do you love yourself?

Love is patient

First, love yourself patiently. Give yourself the opportunity to evolve. We have plans, goals and expectations. At times, they are all we think about. We are so focused on our goals sometimes that we forget to celebrate our accomplishments.

Love is kind

Unfortunately, most people are not able to be kind to themselves. You have to be actively aware of how you treat yourself.  We have to control our self-talk and how we allow others to treat us. Be kind to yourself, forgive yourself as often as possible, and encourage yourself through the hard times.

No envy

In the society we live in today, everyone wants the best of the best. Everyone is trying to keep up with the Joneses. We dismiss all our success when we compare ourselves to others. However, what makes you special and what makes others special is different. It’s important to remember where you started, what you have overcome, what you have accomplished and what you value about your life.

Anger

Lastly, the anger developed from choices is consuming. This causes us to scrutinize every decision we make. Understanding that you make mistakes, bad decisions or are just human is a part of life.
