Your Love Life in the Year of the Pig: Part 1

For most of us, the holiday festivities are long gone and we’re already weeks deep into the new year. For those that celebrate Lunar New Year (a.k.a. Spring Festival and Chinese New Year, though it is observed by numerous Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Korea, Singapore, Malaysia, and more), the biggest event of the year is just about to kick off. Because this calendar is based on moon phases, the date of the annual celebration changes from year to year. This year, the Lunar New Year starts on February 5th, 2019, and it also marks the beginning of the Year of the Pig. Yes, you heard right – Year of the Pig!

Similar to sun/mood signs in astrology, the Chinese have their own form of zodiac signs: different animals are associated with each year, and your birth year indicates what animal sign you are. The superstition goes that if your sign is compatible with the current year’s sign, your year will be showered in good luck and fortune. On the flip side, if your sign is not compatible, you may run into some obstacles in one or more areas of your life.

In general, we can find some peace, happiness, and contentment under the Year of the peaceful, harmonious, leisure-loving Pig. There’s more emphasis on the earthly pleasures of intimacy, nature, fine food, and beautiful things. If you’ve been stressed out, this year is good to take a vacation, relax, and not work so hard.

As a couple’s therapist, I’m most interested in the realm of relationships. What does the Year of the Pig spell out for your love life? Will sparks fly or will they fizzle? Find your birth year and find out! (Before we jump into it, remember that this post is for fun! There’s no scientific guarantee that any predictions will or will not come true.)

PIG

Birth years of the Pig: 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995, 2007, 2019

Contrary to what you might expect, the Chinese astrological system actually holds that those born under the zodiac sign that is being celebrated don’t receive much luck. Instead, they receive lessons, restriction, and difficulties. Unfortunately, romantic success isn’t really in the cards for you Pigs in 2019 either. Don’t expect this year to bring excitement in the relationship department. If you are in a relationship, focus on building more stability and resolving issues in order to strengthen bonds. For singles and non-romantic relationships, this year will teach you some great lessons but will not bring about much growth.

RAT

Birth years of the Rat: 1912, 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984, 1996, 2008

Romance may flourish for Rats in 2019, but it likely won’t be anything too dramatic. Don’t expect any major upgrades or marriage proposals, but do keep in mind that new connections made this year could lead to something more serious down the line.

OX

Birth years of the Ox: 1913, 1925, 1937, 1949, 1961, 1973, 1985, 1997, 2009

After some challenges in the Ox’s love life last year, 2019 finally brings in some good energy for you to find some comfort and companionship. This is a great year for love to come knocking on your door, though some encounters may be too intense and intimidating for the quiet, reserved Ox to handle. Don’t retreat and take the chance!

TIGER

Birth years of the Tiger: 1914, 1926, 1938, 1950, 1962, 1974, 1986, 1998, 2010

While this year is actually a good time for Tigers to expand their social circles, only career and friendship relationships will benefit. On the other hand, love connections made this year won’t necessarily lead to lasting love. There will be a lot of doors closing in your face, but the ones that open will be amazing opportunities for you. Don’t let your fear of failure get the better of you and have the courage to knock on as many doors as you can.

RABBIT

Birth years of the Rabbit: 1915, 1927, 1939, 1951, 1963, 1975, 1987, 1999, 2011

Compatible in temperament to the Pig, Rabbits can expect pretty much every aspect of their lives to receive a boost in 2019. Rabbits, expect your fair share of romantic and interpersonal success this year. Relationships of all kinds will grow and strengthen this year. Singles will find love while those already coupled will find ample opportunities to spend more quality time and connect with each other.

DRAGON

Birth years of the Dragon: 1928, 1940, 1952, 1964, 1976, 1988, 2000, 2012

While Dragons will find many opportunities this year, the success of romantic opportunities will depend heavily on your willingness to connect. There are love opportunities for you if you’re willing to come down to earth and have a conversation rather than just being admired from afar. If you’re looking for love this year, you will have to put in some work!
