3 Benefits of Men Going to Therapy

For this blog I want to talk to the men, my apologies to the women, please feel free to pass along the info in this blog to the important men in your life. With that intro out of the way, let’s get

straight to the point. I want to propose the question “How can therapy benefit men?” Fellas, take a moment to think, how could meeting with a mental health professional help your life? You may be thinking, “maybe they could help me with anger, depression, anxiety or stress.” As a therapist that has been working in clinical positions for 5 years, I can say “Yes, they can help you with all of those things, but I want to talk about some benefits you may have not considered before.” Keep reading for 3 benefits of men going to therapy.

Life Roles

As man, you play many roles in your life. Those roles could include being a father, husband, brother, son, employee, coach or role model. Before becoming a father, how much time did you spend reflecting on what type of father you want to be? As a husband, when was the last time you stopped and took time to think about what kind of husband you are? As a man in therapy, you can make significant improvements in your roles by working with a therapist that can assist you in exploring these roles. Helping you to identify your strengths and areas of growth that you want to work on to become a better father, husband, brother, son, employee, coach or role model.

Masculinity

Masculinity can be very complex. Society can have a narrow view of what masculinity is, what it means to be a man and what is acceptable. Let’s be honest, going outside the lines of what other people think masculinity is can result in ridicule. This can lead to you becoming angry, and possibly enduring that triggering statement, “Be a man!” Working with a therapist, they can help by providing you a safe space where you can freely explore all your thoughts on masculinity and what you think it means to be a man.

Awareness

Working with a therapist can help increase your awareness. This means you have increased insight into your thoughts, feelings and emotions. You may be thinking, “Why do I need insight into any of those things?” Well, having increased awareness of your thoughts, feelings and emotions can help you to identify what makes you unhappy, stressed or even angry. A therapist can help you work through those emotions and provide you tools to work toward being happier, less stressed and at peace. I know, increased awareness sounds good right about now.

Overall, as a man, there are many benefits you can gain from going to therapy. Really exploring your life roles, masculinity and awareness can help you live a more fulfilled life. Therapist are here to assist as you explore these important areas and ask the questions that lead to breakthroughs.
